Relativistic time dilation → GPS clock correction

GPS satellites' clocks drift relative to the ground because of both their altitude (gravity) and their speed; uncorrected, this would throw positions off by ~6 miles a day — so the relativistic effects are engineered around daily.

The chain
1
Time runs **faster** the farther you are from a gravitational mass (general relativity).
michelle-thaller in 2026-05-28-youtube-powerfuljre-joe-rogan-experience-2506-michelle-thaller: "Your head is in a different time frame than your feet right now... the farther away you are from a gravitational source." (clocks moved ~2 ft apart already differ measurably)
2
Time runs **slower** the faster you move (special relativity).
michelle-thaller in 2026-05-28-youtube-powerfuljre-joe-rogan-experience-2506-michelle-thaller: "The faster you go, the slower your time goes." (ISS astronauts at ~20,000 mph return ~1/100th second younger — velocity effect dominates for them)
3
GPS satellites are far from Earth's gravity (clocks gain) *and* moving fast (clocks lose); for their medium orbit the altitude/gravity effect dominates, so net their clocks run ahead of ground clocks.
michelle-thaller in 2026-05-28-youtube-powerfuljre-joe-rogan-experience-2506-michelle-thaller: "They're so far away, they're actually going a little faster than we are in time. Now they're also slowed down by their fast velocity... but the bigger effect for GPS satellites is how far away from the Earth they are."
4
Uncorrected, the position solution drifts ~6 miles per day, so nasa calibrates the satellites for both effects to keep GPS accurate.
michelle-thaller in 2026-05-28-youtube-powerfuljre-joe-rogan-experience-2506-michelle-thaller: "Within a day, if we didn't take into account the time difference these things are in, we'd be about six miles off."
What would falsify this
  • Step 4: if GPS maintained accuracy with relativistic corrections switched off, the chain would be falsified (it does not).
Contradictions / tensions
  • None internal to the source; relativistic GPS correction is well established. (Note: Thaller's quoted satellite speeds are approximate/illustrative.)
Implications
  • The most concrete everyday proof that relativity is real engineering, not abstraction. Useful as the canonical worked example under gravitational-time-dilation.
