Holding the class
Napier’s firing in October 2025 nearly blew up Florida’s 2026 board. NIL and a Zoom held all but one commit. The finished class is portal-heavy — 29 transfers among 50 official newcomers.
Billy Napier was fired in mid-October 2025 after a 4–8 season and a 22–23 record over four years. Florida hired Jon Sumrall after Lane Kiffin chose LSU. The 2026 recruiting board sat in flux under Napier, then interim Billy Gonzales, then Sumrall’s introduction the Monday before the December 3 early signing period. Coaching changes usually scatter commits. This one mostly did not.
Official copy, quoting On3, says it “took some work with NIL to hold onto some of Florida’s 2026 commitments.” Athletic director Scott Stricklin and Sumrall held a Sunday-night Zoom with commits. Florida “only lost one commit” through the change — a single-sourced claim with no published per-player dollar list. It is still the only dated, fetched assertion that NIL changed a Florida football recruiting outcome.
On December 3 Florida signed a first wave of 16 high-school prospects — “nearly all of its committed prospects” after a 4–8 season and a coaching change. Tampa Jesuit quarterback Will Griffin was Florida’s first commitment in the 2026 class. The January portal then supplied most of the rest. On February 4, 2026, UF announced 50 official newcomers: 29 transfers, 20 high-school recruits, and one junior-college recruit. The 2026 cycle is not a pure high-school story. Portal volume is the larger inbound count.

The 2027 board
The open high-school class is trench-first. Rankings disagree by service and date — ESPN 8, 247 team 11 as of an August 21, 2026 fetch. Position coaches, especially Phil Trautwein, are the named closers. A 247Sports recruiter table from May is a 16-commit snapshot, not the August board. Whether the 2027 class holds through signing is still open. So is the size of Florida’s football-only NIL revenue share and how SEC television money shows up in recruiting — both are question pages without settled answers.
