China 230:1 shipbuilding gap → attritable autonomous naval mass → Port Alpha

China's 230:1 ship-tonnage lead plus a shrinking US fleet forces a shift from $3B manned destroyers to attritable autonomous mass; Saronic's Port Alpha / firm-fixed-price IRAD is the industrial expression — gated by autonomy remaining ~1% of the DoW budget.

The chain
1
China outbuilds the US ~230:1 in ship tonnage (100k vs 23M GT/year; 57% of world capacity) and delivered 1,000+ commercial ships last year vs five in the US.
dino-mavrukis in 2026-08-15-all-in-podcast-saronic-founders-autonomous-warships-chinas: "The United states can build 100,000 gross tons of ships every year. ... The Chinese ... can build 23 million gross tons. So they can outbuild the US 230 to 1. ... Thirty years ago ... they had 5% of the world's shipbuilding capacity. Today they have 57%."
2
The US naval fleet is shrinking (296 ships vs a 355 statutory minimum; 9 built and 19 retired last year) so commercial yards cannot flip to defense capacity the way they did in WWII.
dino-mavrukis in 2026-08-15-all-in-podcast-saronic-founders-autonomous-warships-chinas: "The US naval fleet has 296 ships today. There's a congressional mandate, statutory minimum of 355 ships. ... Last year we built nine ships, but we retired 19 naval vessels. ... The Chinese delivered somewhere in the ballpark of 30 ships. ... They delivered over a thousand commercial ships last year. The United States built five."

Attritable autonomous hulls invert destroyer unit economics: a $3B manned destroyer fields ~96 VLS tubes (~15/year at $30M/tube); Saronic's 180-ft Marauder carries 16 VLS and is planned at 20/year (320 tubes/year) at a fraction of the cost; Corsair is ~$1M and 2,000/year in Austin.
dino-mavrukis in 2026-08-15-all-in-podcast-saronic-founders-autonomous-warships-chinas: "A destroyer, naval Destroyer costs about $3 billion. ... you can field about 96 VLS tubes. ... on average, you're fielding somewhere between 10 to 15 VLS tubes per year at a cost of 30 million per tube. ... We're going to be building 20 marauders per year at our shipyard in Louisiana. ... We can carry the equivalent of 16 VLS tubes on the back of that 180 foot fully autonomous ship. So now you can field 320 VLS tubes per year as opposed to 15."
dino-mavrukis in 2026-08-15-all-in-podcast-saronic-founders-autonomous-warships-chinas: "we could build 2,000 Corsair per year right now at our manufacturing facility in Austin."

Neo-primes invert cost-plus (Saronic has raised ~$2.5B private IRAD on firm-fixed-price) but autonomy is still only ~1% of the DoW budget; Port Alpha (Brownsville, 800→4,000 acres, 10,000 jobs, claim to cut US ship cost in half) is the industrial unlock.
dino-mavrukis in 2026-08-15-all-in-podcast-saronic-founders-autonomous-warships-chinas: "To date, we're just about four years old. We've raised two and a half billion dollars in private capital. We're pouring that into R and D. ... When you look at the overall Defense Department of War's budget, 1%, 1% goes to autonomous systems. That's not nearly enough."
dino-mavrukis in 2026-08-15-all-in-podcast-saronic-founders-autonomous-warships-chinas: "we're proud to announce that we found that in Brownsville, Texas. ... We're going to start on a 800 acre plot of land which in and of itself 800 acres is now the largest shipyard in the United States. ... We have the opportunity over time to scale that to 4,000 acres. We're going to invest billions of dollars into this project. We're going to create 10,000 jobs over the next 10 years."
dino-mavrukis in 2026-08-15-all-in-podcast-saronic-founders-autonomous-warships-chinas: "We think just by investing in product and processes and new shipyards, we can cut the cost of a ship in the United States in half. So if you have a ship that costs $300 million, we can get that under 150 million."
What would falsify this
  • Step 1: US or allied commercial ship deliveries recover to a material share of world GT (China share falls sustainably below ~50%).
  • Step 3: Navy does not buy Marauder/Corsair at the stated rates, or VLS-per-year math fails in an operational test.
  • Step 4: Port Alpha is not broken ground / autonomy share of DoW budget stays ≤1% through the next two NDAAs.
Contradictions / tensions
  • Founders are selling their own book — 230:1, 2,000 Corsairs/year, and 50% cost cut are first-party claims with no independent confirmation in this source.
  • Autonomy budget at 1% means the industrial plan can outrun the procurement plan; same CR / one-year-money risk already filed on the magazine-depth concept.
  • Manned/unmanned mix is explicitly unknown; hybrid Navy still needs destroyers for forward decision-makers.
Implications
  • Saronic is private — no clean public ticker. Watch for IPO / strategic offtake. Public shipbuilding incumbents (HII, GD) are the disruption surface; VLS/payload primes (RTX, LMT) still supply the tubes.
  • The live policy unlock is autonomy's share of the DoW budget (1% → 5%) plus SHIPS Act / Maritime EO / multi-year authority already tracked on defense-industrial-base-magazine-depth.
  • Port Alpha + SpaceX in Brownsville is a Texas Gulf industrial-labor cluster; workforce/upskilling is the binding constraint the founders themselves name.
  • Corroborates Bianco's $3B-destroyer-vs-cheap-attritable arithmetic already on defense-industrial-base-magazine-depth with a first-party neo-prime unit-econ model.
