Externalize and resurface

One-line summary: The consensus ADHD compensation is to move working memory outside the head (capture) and engineer the return of that material at the right moment (resurface) — and the resurface half is the load-bearing one.

The insight

Every source converges on the same two-step compensation for idea-volatility-in-adhd: externalize (capture immediately, with zero friction, before the thought evaporates) and resurface (design the system to hand the idea back when it's relevant). The non-obvious finding is the emphasis: capture is necessary but cheap, and almost everyone does it badly because they stop there. The hard, decisive half is the return — "if you can't find it later, capturing it was pointless." A pile of captured notes you never see again is not a second brain; a system that "catches every fleeting spark and hands it back when you need it" is.

Design implications

  • For sparks: build the resurfacing feature, not just capture. Capture is solved; return is the edge.
  • Prefer event-based / relevance-triggered resurfacing over time-based alarms (see idea-volatility-in-adhd).
  • Keep capture friction near zero (voice path); do organizing/synthesis later, in review — never at capture time.
