The insight
The everyday ADHD experience of "I had a great idea and lost it" has a named mechanism. Prospective memory — remembering to act on a future intention — runs through five stages (encode → retain → retrieve → execute → evaluate), and ADHD's weak working memory breaks the chain at retention: the plan is held briefly, then distraction wipes it before it transfers to longer-term storage. It doesn't degrade; it disappears. This is why capture has to happen at the moment the idea arrives — the window is short and there is no later recall to fall back on.

Contradictions / tensions

Caveat: adult ADHD cognition is heterogeneous — one meta-analysis found executive functions "not generally reduced" in adults (Schoechlin & Engel 2005) and a normal-cognition subgroup exists (Cerny et al. 2025). So "global EF deficit" overstates it; working memory and prospective memory specifically are the robust parts.
