Have the top-5 semis exhausted their earnings-revision runway, and does money mechanically rotate to MAG8 laggards (and out to healthcare/financials) into Q4?
Have the top-5 semis exhausted their earnings-revision runway, and does money mechanically rotate to MAG8 laggards (and out to healthcare/financials) into Q4?
The question
DataTrek shows the top-5 semis got 36%/33% EPS-estimate upgrades over 90 days (vs MAG8's ~7%/5%), driving 52.5x forward P/E and +168% YTD (vs MAG8 +4.5%). Tech's outperformance vs the S&P hit a 6-standard-deviation extreme on June 2 — historically always mean-reverting. Does the second half of 2026 see a relative rotation out of the top-5 semis into lower-multiple MAG8 laggards, and out of tech into healthcare (XLV) / financials (XLF)?
Why it matters
A de-concentration / mean-reversion positioning call with hard numbers and a dated window (~100 trading days from June 2 = late October). It is the tradeable answer to "the number one question": once capex stops being rewarded, leadership rotates from the AI-capex darlings.
What we currently believe
Tactically plausible; DataTrek remains long-term tech bulls, so this is a relative fade, not a secular reversal. The open question is whether valuation alone triggers it or investors wait for Q2 hyperscaler earnings to confirm capex.
Evidence we have
- jessica-rabe in 2026-07-13-podcast-the-compound-and-friends-the-number-one-question-facing-investors-how-the: "Tech beat the S&P by 29 percentage points over the prior 50 trading days on June 2, which was over a 6 standard deviation event and the most extreme reading in this data set by a wide margin."
- jessica-rabe in 2026-07-13-podcast-the-compound-and-friends-the-number-one-question-facing-investors-how-the: "The five semi names are up an average of 168% year to date. The Mag 8 is up just 4 and a half percent year to date. After triple digit advances, the bar for them to keep outperforming is just far higher than it was six months ago."
- josh-brown in 2026-07-13-podcast-the-compound-and-friends-the-number-one-question-facing-investors-how-the: rotation destinations are "health care and financials... people just have a preference for those stocks for six months. Doesn't mean tech has to fall 20%." Higher conviction in semi capital-equipment over chipmakers.
Evidence we need
- Q2 hyperscaler earnings-call capex commentary (the explicit trigger DataTrek names).
- Whether the June-2 mean-reversion actually plays out toward the ~late-October window.
How to resolve
Machine-checkable: track top-5-semi relative performance vs MAG8 and XLK-vs-S&P spread through late October; confirmed if semis underperform MAG8 and tech reverts toward its 1.2pt long-run relative average.
What would falsify this
- A strong labor market + another leg of AI-capex enthusiasm keeps semis bid; or the Q2 hyperscaler calls re-accelerate capex and revisions resume.
