ASE Technology Holding (ASE / ASX)
ASE Technology Holding (ASE / ASX)
One-line summary: World's largest OSAT; the named first recipient of TSMC's August 2026 CoW (Chip-on-Wafer) outsourcing expansion, and the 2026 overflow residual in the only fetched analyst split.
What it is
Taiwan-based outsourced semiconductor assembly and test group (ASE Technology Holding). Subsidiary SPIL (Siliconware Precision Industries) is the group's advanced-packaging expansion vehicle. Already on cowos-packaging-capacity-crunch suggested-tickers as the largest OSAT / CoWoS sub-contractor.
Why it matters to stock-market
amkor-cowos-tsmc-overflow-osat asked whether TSMC CoWoS overflow accrues to amkor. The 2026-08-17 pass found overflow is real, but 2026 volume looks ASE/SPIL-led, not Amkor-led. ASE is the tradeable residual claimant for this year's CoW expansion; Amkor's named TSMC contract is Arizona 2028.
Key facts
- CoW outsourcing, named first. TrendForce (2026-08-05, citing ETNews): TSMC decided to expand outsourcing of CoW — the front-end of CoWoS — to OSAT companies "including ASE." ASE, amkor, and SPIL have long run WoS under TSMC licenses; prior CoW volumes were "limited." From 2026-08-17-autoresearch-amkor-cowos-overflow.
- Capex. Asia Business Daily (2026-08-14): ASE 2026 capex $10.5B, +98% YoY, as TSMC began delegating CoW "from the beginning of this month." From 2026-08-17-autoresearch-amkor-cowos-overflow.
- SPIL Douliu. SPIL broke ground 2026-08-11 on a nearly TWD 100B Douliu plant for CoWoS; first-phase operations 2028. TWD 200B invested over two years. Jensen Huang attended SPIL's Tanzi opening in January 2025. AMD is collaborating with ASE/SPIL on next-generation wafer-based 2.5D bridge interconnect. From 2026-08-17-autoresearch-amkor-cowos-overflow.
- Customer-routed end-to-end CoWoS (not TSMC-led). Mirror Daily (June, via TrendForce): with AMD backing, ASE and SPIL are building their own CoW lines so chipmakers can ship TSMC-fabbed wafers to ASE/SPIL for end-to-end CoWoS — "not being led by TSMC." From 2026-08-17-autoresearch-amkor-cowos-overflow.
- Mizuho 2026-vs-2027 split (analyst, not first-party). ASE CoWoS 20k wpm in 2026 / 40–45k in 2027 (AMD Venice + Nvidia Vera CPU). amkor CoWoS 20–25k wpm by end-2027. Mizuho rates ASE BUY on this buildout. From 2026-08-17-autoresearch-amkor-cowos-overflow.
- 2026 CoW equipment talks are Korean TCB/dicing, not besi HB. TrendForce/ETNews: OSAT POs for CoW lines focus on dicing and bonding, with discussions underway with South Korean suppliers. Do not equate ASE's 2026 wafer residual with a BESI hybrid-bonding book. BESI's own "CoWoS-like" OSAT orders are real but unquantified vs TSMC-captive AP7. Strengths (from a thesis-input perspective)
- First-named in the August CoW wave; Taiwan proximity to TSMC; SPIL already in Nvidia's packaging orbit.
Weaknesses (from a thesis-input perspective)
- TSMC in-house CoWoS expansion (10 packaging facilities; street 140k → 220k wpm) still caps how much overflow exists. The May wiki already flagged this. From 2026-08-17-autoresearch-amkor-cowos-overflow.
