Stock-market dispatch — 2026-05-18

Top of mind

Apple-Intel 18A-P test production runs are under way as of late April/May 2026 — the strongest confirmation yet that the preliminary deal is substantive, not exploratory. Bloomberg says 18A for iPad Pro and MacBook Air; supply-chain sources say 18A-P for M7; the reconciliation is entry-level Apple silicon on 18A, flagship M7 on 18A-P. Either way, Intel is in active silicon for Apple products for the first time since 2006. The VLSI symposium (June 14–18) is the next hard gate: 18A-P spec and yield data will be public, and Apple tape-out evidence may emerge. Simultaneously, a new policy catalyst arrived: the July 1, 2026 Commerce Secretary report on Section 232 semiconductors could trigger Phase 2 tariffs plus a "tariff-offset program for US manufacturing investors" — described as an IRA-equivalent for semiconductor tariffs. If enacted, US-fab wafer prices carry a structural premium over imports, directly strengthening the Intel/TSMC Arizona economics thesis without depending on the Apple deal alone.

Undervalued candidates (today)

  • us-fab-capacity-bottleneck — INTC at ~$115 vs base case ~$130–155. What pushes it from marginal to acted-on: Apple deal formalization before Q2 July earnings or VLSI 18A-P yield ≥70%.
  • us-critical-mineral-independence — MP likely undervalued vs base (+15–30%), but the conviction is the binary: the November 10 deadline creates asymmetric upside (bull +60–100%) not yet priced during the pause.

New chains to investigate (hypothesis-stage)

  • china-rare-earth-november-2026-deadline — MP. Binary: China reinstates controls November 10 vs. extends pause. Graduate to active: China signals unwillingness to extend OR DOD guarantees MP offtake.
  • section-232-phase-2-us-fab-premium — INTC, TSM-Arizona, Samsung-Taylor. July 1, 2026 Commerce report triggers Phase 2 tariffs + tariff-offset program = IRA analog for semiconductor tariffs. Graduate to active: Phase 2 announcement with specific rates and offset mechanics.

New theses (now active)

None today. Both new chains are hypothesis-stage pending their catalysts.

Updated theses (existing active)

  • us-fab-capacity-bottleneck — Apple 18A-P test production runs started (late April/May 2026); strongest confirmation yet. Bloomberg vs. supply-chain scope divergence documented (18A for entry vs. 18A-P for M7 — reconcilable). INTC ~10% below ATH $129.44; base case +13%–35% from ~$115. Section 232 tariff-offset program adds a policy-leg catalyst.
  • nuclear-baseload-for-ai-data-centers — Meta signed 7.8 GW nuclear PPA bundle (largest single-entity nuclear commitment ever). Uranium term price at 14-year high $90/lb. US DC electricity demand 176→580 TWh by 2028. Thesis is compounding.
  • us-critical-mineral-independence — China's October 2025 comprehensive REE export controls paused until November 10, 2026 at APEC. Binary catalyst identified. US domestic production +400% YoY 2024; import reliance still 80%.
  • picks-and-shovels-leading-edge-fab-buildout — AMAT Q2 record $7.91B, Q3 guide $8.95B; Citi PT raised to $520. EPIC Center now includes TSMC as founding partner — AMAT co-innovates with every leading-edge fab simultaneously. Conviction remains high.

Contradicted / weakened

  • copper-supercycle-ai-data-centers — Goldman Sachs (May 2026) forecasts continued global surplus and price cap below $11,000/ton; S&P Global (Jan 2026): "elevated prices overextended." Thesis weakened from near-term catalyst to multi-year structural story. Status remains active but conviction downgraded medium-high → medium for FCX specifically (Grasberg Q1 incident compounds: -27% YoY volume, cost $1.40→$2.60/lb). Calibration entry filed.

Open questions worth a human's eye

What I looked at

  • Step 1 autoresearch (5 passes): Intel 18A yield update, Apple-Intel deal May 18, Samsung foundry update, CSP capex May 18 incremental, copper supercycle update
  • Step 2 macro bucket scan (1 pass): energy/critical minerals + US industrial policy/tariffs + regulatory (combined bucket)

  • Valuation snapshots: 8 refreshed (all stale — WebFetch 403; bull/base/bear narratives added from wiki evidence)
  • New hypothesis chains: 2 (china-rare-earth-november-2026-deadline, section-232-phase-2-us-fab-premium)
  • Calibration entries filed: 1 (copper supercycle conviction downgrade)
