Stock-market dispatch — 2026-08-28
Headless run (Fri). Research output, not advice — brain never trades. Marks are 2026-08-27 closes (Thursday, the latest completed session). Weekly ledger (4d) due and written. Supabase upsert + push are performed by the wrapper, not this run. Kevin Warsh speaks at 10:00 a.m. EDT today — this run is before the speech. Do not graduate SCHW off a preview.
Top of mind
Kevin Warsh has not spoken yet. His first Jackson Hole keynote is this morning at ten. The funds rate has sat in 3.50 to 3.75 percent since December. July PCE held at 3.7 percent. The Kansas City Fed's Jeffrey Schmid said current policy is not restricting spending; Cleveland's Beth Hammack said now is the time to act. That is regional-president color, not a Warsh reaction function. warsh-higher-for-longer-to-brokerage-nii-rerate
Stan Druckenmiller spent the week attacking Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's long-end buybacks. He called the long-term Treasury yield the only fiscal disciplinarian the United States has left, and every basis point of artificial yield suppression a subsidy to procrastination. Forward Guidance's unnamed co-host thinks Warsh will not hike the front end and cannot hit Bessent on the long end this morning without throwing gasoline. Jack Farley reads the US long-end move as term premium — a confidence problem, not a hike path. Score the speech after ten on MOVE and on whether he describes a reaction function. The September 15–16 FOMC is still the rate decision. treasury-buyback-twist-to-hard-asset-debasement
ServiceNow jumped 10 percent on Thursday, to $138.43. Software as a group ripped with it — the IGV ETF was up 7.8 percent. The live paper book still shows NOW beating that theme by 7.8 percent. The gap to the 52-week high narrowed from 35 percent to 29 percent. It is still the deepest software discount in the book, and the chain did not change. agentic-ai-seat-erosion-to-saas-rerate
The AI-infrastructure cluster is already overweight, so today's new-chain budget did not add another name there — the thirteenth weekday in a row.
Strongest-conviction buys

Deliberately not ranked, for the thirteenth consecutive day: VLO / PSX / MPC. VLO $346.59 (−1.8% off hi), PSX $239.81 (−2.9%), MPC $363.54 (−1.1%). They are still sitting on the highs. A sit is not a gap.
⚠ BWXT (0.55) at $155.85 (−35.6% off hi) remains the deepest discount in the medium tier after MP and NOW. CBRS $186.67 (+2.48%, −51.7% off hi) — cheaper; stays off the shortlist: medium, and ai-infrastructure is already ⚠ over. Do not rank WMT on the crash hangover ($102.63, −24.1% off hi). Do not chase DE $622.66 (−1.87%, −7.6% off hi). Do not rank NVDA: conviction 0.32, below the floor, and Thursday's +8.7% print-session left it −3.6% off its high.

Undervalued candidates (today)
- MP at $59.03, still −41.1% off high, live sector-excess +14.2% — the minerals gap that is also working. drone-warfare-demand-to-mp-hree-rerate
- NOW at $138.43 after a 10 percent bounce, still −28.9% off high. Evidence unchanged. Live vs sector +7.8%. agentic-ai-seat-erosion-to-saas-rerate
- BWXT at $155.85, −35.6% off high on a dated end-2026 inflection. legacy-priced-backlog-rolloff-to-bwxt-margin-inflection
- CBRS at $186.67, −51.7%. Cheap; not ranked (cluster already overweight). inference-demand-to-wafer-scale-advantage
- WERN at $38.53, −18.9%. Do not chase SNDR (−10.3%). driver-supply-removal-to-truckload-contract-rate-inflection
New chains to investigate (hypothesis-stage)
- None auto-drafted. Druckenmiller vs Bessent and Potter's SPR caverns attach to chains the wiki already has. Cap 3–5/day; thin-vertical steering honored. Buckets were #9 financials (Warsh, the event) and #8 healthcare (CDMO contradiction, still no 2026 price series).
- ⚠ Still no hypothesis page for the healthcare CDMO contradiction — eleventh consecutive day. The injunction delays 1260H; it does not invent a 2026 price series. Human call, not a silent downgrade. OMB BCOC list 2026-12-18.
New theses (now active)
- None. Zero graduations. 1 new entity (daniel-lacalle). 0 new mechanisms (1 extended: Treasury buyback / debasement). SPR cavern-integrity got a third independent source-type.
Updated theses (existing active)
- Warsh speaks this morning. PCE 3.7 percent. Schmid and Hammack are hawkish; Forward Guidance thinks he will not hike. Do not graduate. warsh-higher-for-longer-to-brokerage-nii-rerate
- Druckenmiller named Bessent's buybacks as fiscal suppression. Step 2 (bills-as-funding) stays
partial. Do not emit gold off a preview. treasury-buyback-twist-to-hard-asset-debasement - The SPR went below 300 million barrels the week of August 7. Construction Physics: caverns are always full of liquid; no official DOE/Sandia/GAO SPR-wide damage floor except roof oil. That corroborates Alhajji's cavern claim. It does not re-argue loans versus sales. spr-releases-as-loans-not-sales
- WuXi AppTec's 1260H listing is still enjoined. OMB December list untouched. Still no 2026 realized CDMO prices. biosecure-cdmo-scarcity-to-western-cdmo-pricing-power
- FERC still has not ruled on the PJM backstop. Next gate September 29. Do not re-rate Constellation. pjm-capacity-prices-to-nuclear-premium
- Nvidia's first cash session on the hardware print: $227.98, +8.7%, −3.6% off high. CUDA stays below the floor. cuda-moat-erosion-to-nvda-rerate
Contradicted / weakened
- None closed.
- ⚠ UNRESOLVED CONTRADICTION, eleventh day — Western CDMO pricing power vs a −15% realized mAb fill-finish series. The injunction delays one enforcement path; it does not resolve the price series. No conviction or status changed unilaterally — human call. biosecure-cdmo-scarcity-to-western-cdmo-pricing-power
- ⚠ CUDA Step 2 is still an unmerged pair (AgentX vs Jalapeño InferenceX). Thursday's cash session does not merge them. Conviction held.
- 4e / weekly mark: 20 live positions, 3 flags < −10% — TJX −21.2% (
low), PWR −15.7% (medium, healed), INTC −10.6% (medium, healed). CAT dropped the flag at −9.2%. 0 automatic calibrations. Best live: DNN +15.0%, MP +14.2%, STVN +11.5%. Worst cluster:energy-oil−7.3% — ⚠ thirteenth consecutive week the label mismatch is noted without being fixed: live rows CCJ/CF/NTR, not the refiners a percent or two off highs. Best cluster:critical-minerals+9.5%. Chain book sector-edge went flat (−0.0%) this week, the first weekly mark that is not modestly negative.
Open questions worth a human's eye
- Should the Western-CDMO thesis be downgraded on a −15% realized price series now that the 1260H fast path is enjoined? Eleventh day. Flagged, not decided. biosecure-cdmo-scarcity-to-western-cdmo-pricing-power
- The energy-oil cluster label is still measuring the wrong names — thirteenth week flagged, still unfixed.
- Does FERC issue on ER26-3380 before the September 30 auction window? Still no order. Do not re-rate on silence. pjm-capacity-prices-to-nuclear-premium
- Does Warsh describe a reaction function this morning, or keep "play the ball"? Do not graduate off the headline. warsh-higher-for-longer-to-brokerage-nii-rerate
- Does a speaker-labeled Nvidia transcript confirm the secondary call color, and does Huang address custom inference silicon vs CUDA? Do not adjudicate off the press release. cuda-moat-erosion-to-nvda-rerate
