Stock-market dispatch — 2026-09-01
Headless run (Tue). Research output, not advice — brain never trades. Marks are 2026-08-31 closes (Monday, the latest completed session). Weekly ledger (4d) last written Friday — skipped today. Supabase upsert + push are performed by the wrapper, not this run.
Top of mind
The trucks did not come back. DAT's dry-van print for the week ending August 21 is a four-cent ease, not a cycle break. Spot linehaul paid to carriers averaged $2.21 a mile, down 1.6 percent week over week, still 35.6 percent above a year ago and 24 percent above the nine-year seasonal average. Load posts were flat. Truck posts fell 28.4 percent year over year. The load-to-truck ratio firmed to 9.88, from 5.72 a year earlier. ATA's July tonnage index slipped 1 percent, to 113.5. Bob Costello's line, quoted by DAT: the tightening owes almost entirely to capacity leaving, not to freight demand coming back. driver-supply-removal-to-truckload-contract-rate-inflection
That is a third measurement type on a chain Schneider and Werner already stated from the Q2 calls. It does not settle how many CDL holders actually left — J.B. Hunt's 5 to 12 percent versus a third-party minus 5.5 percent. Do not re-rate Werner, Knight-Swift, or Schneider on a seasonal dip. C.H. Robinson's August forecast is still plus 34 percent year over year on dry-van cost per mile.
Two calendars that were supposed to speak this week stayed quiet. FERC has still not ruled on PJM's backstop filing, ER26-3380. The next gate is September 29, so the offer window can open September 30. Do not re-rate Constellation on silence. pjm-capacity-prices-to-nuclear-premium The Defense Department's answer in the WuXi AppTec 1260H case was due today. None showed up on this morning's pass. The August 7 injunction still bars the designation; the OMB list remains December 18. Still no 2026 realized CDMO prices. That call stays with a human. biosecure-cdmo-scarcity-to-western-cdmo-pricing-power
The AI-infrastructure cluster is already overweight, so today's new-chain budget did not add another name there — the fifteenth weekday in a row.

Deliberately not ranked, for the fifteenth consecutive day: VLO / PSX / MPC. VLO $358.92 (−1.1% off hi), PSX $246.58 (−1.6%), MPC $373.32 (−0.9%). They closed on the highs. A sit is not a gap.
⚠ BWXT (0.55) at $152.29 (−37.0% off hi) remains the deepest discount in the medium tier after MP and NOW. CBRS $184.24 (+2.88%, −52.3% off hi) — cheaper; stays off the shortlist: medium, and ai-infrastructure is already ⚠ over. Do not rank WMT on the crash hangover ($104.87, −22.4% off hi). Do not chase DE $654.91 (+3.90%, −2.9% off hi). Do not rank NVDA: conviction 0.32, below the floor; Monday recouped some of Friday's giveback, −6.7% off its high. Do not graduate SCHW.

Undervalued candidates (today)
- MP at $54.75, −45.4% off high after Monday's drop, live sector-excess +14.2% — the minerals gap that is also working. drone-warfare-demand-to-mp-hree-rerate
- NOW at $147.99 after a third bounce session, still −24.0% off high. Evidence unchanged. Live vs sector +7.8%. agentic-ai-seat-erosion-to-saas-rerate
- BWXT at $152.29, −37.0% off high on a dated end-2026 inflection. legacy-priced-backlog-rolloff-to-bwxt-margin-inflection
- CBRS at $184.24, −52.3%. Cheap; not ranked (cluster already overweight). inference-demand-to-wafer-scale-advantage
- WERN at $39.18, −17.5%. DAT is corroboration, not a re-rate. Do not chase SNDR (−12.1%). driver-supply-removal-to-truckload-contract-rate-inflection
New chains to investigate (hypothesis-stage)
- None auto-drafted. DAT/Costello attaches to a chain the wiki already has. Sarah Guo's nuclear-as-baseload and "work backwards from a GPU data center" lines attach to existing energy and fab pages — not a new AI-infrastructure name. Cap 3–5/day; thin-vertical steering honored. Buckets were #11 transport/logistics (DAT) and #10 consumer (checked; Circana PL share is already a hypothesis, PLMA 404).
- ⚠ Still no hypothesis page for the healthcare CDMO contradiction — thirteenth consecutive day. The injunction delays 1260H; it does not invent a 2026 price series. Human call, not a silent downgrade. OMB BCOC list 2026-12-18. DoD answer was due today; none found.
New theses (now active)
- None. Zero graduations. 0 new people minted (sarah-guo reused from the AI thread). 0 new mechanisms (attach-only day).
Updated theses (existing active)
- Truckload tightness is still capacity exit. The $0.04 DAT dip does not break the Q3 RPM guide. driver-supply-removal-to-truckload-contract-rate-inflection
- FERC still has not ruled on the PJM backstop. Next gate September 29. Do not re-rate Constellation. pjm-capacity-prices-to-nuclear-premium
- WuXi AppTec's 1260H listing is still enjoined. No DoD answer on the day it was due. Still no 2026 realized CDMO prices. biosecure-cdmo-scarcity-to-western-cdmo-pricing-power
- Intel still has no named outside 18A/14A high-volume order. October's PDK 0.9 remains the dated test. intel-18a-yield-vs-tsmc
- Howmet dropped 7.5 percent, to $244.95. That is tape, not a split of price versus mix. The chain did not move. aerospace-casting-scarcity-to-howmet-margin-capture
- Guo on Invest Like the Best: nuclear is cheap as baseload only if people are convinced it is safe. Color on an existing page, not a re-rate. nuclear-baseload-for-ai-data-centers
Contradicted / weakened
- None closed.
- ⚠ UNRESOLVED CONTRADICTION, thirteenth day — Western CDMO pricing power vs a −15% realized mAb fill-finish series. The injunction delays one enforcement path; it does not resolve the price series. No conviction or status changed unilaterally — human call. biosecure-cdmo-scarcity-to-western-cdmo-pricing-power
- ⚠ CUDA Step 2 is still an unmerged pair (AgentX vs Jalapeño InferenceX). Monday's bounce does not merge them. Conviction held.
- 4e: 20 live positions, 3 flags < −10% — TJX −21.2% (
low), PWR −15.7% (medium, healed), INTC −10.6% (medium, healed). 0 automatic calibrations. Digest as-of is still 2026-08-27. Best live: DNN +15.0%, MP +14.2%, STVN +11.5%. Worst cluster:energy-oil−7.3% — ⚠ fifteenth consecutive week the label mismatch is noted without being fixed: live rows CCJ/CF/NTR, not the refiners sitting on the highs.
Open questions worth a human's eye
- Should the Western-CDMO thesis be downgraded on a −15% realized price series now that the 1260H fast path is enjoined — and the DoD answer due today did not appear? Thirteenth day. Flagged, not decided. biosecure-cdmo-scarcity-to-western-cdmo-pricing-power
- The energy-oil cluster label is still measuring the wrong names — fifteenth week flagged, still unfixed.
- Does FERC issue on ER26-3380 before the September 30 auction window? Still no order. Do not re-rate on silence. pjm-capacity-prices-to-nuclear-premium
- Does the September 15–16 statement do the work the Jackson Hole keynote refused? Do not graduate SCHW. warsh-higher-for-longer-to-brokerage-nii-rerate
What I looked at
- Run status: headless; steps 0.5–7 in-turn. Price fetch paced 8/min — 107 priced, all 08-31 closes except SSNLF (still 08-28). ⚠ 5 skipped: ASE, BESI (plan-tier — sixteenth day); GNKG, HXSCL (404); GEIS (404, junk ticker from a table scrape). CoWoS snapshot still cannot price ASE/BESI.
- Breadth (2a): ai-infrastructure 44% ⚠ over (48 chains, 66 live signals, 8 clusters) → net-new steered to thin verticals. Delivered: buckets #11 transport (DAT) and #10 consumer (checked, no new clipping). Zero net-new ai-infrastructure chains, fifteenth consecutive day.
- Research passes: 1 (DAT week-ending Aug 21 + Costello; also-checked FERC / 18A / WuXi DoD / ACA).
- Ingestion veins (0.5–0.8): Podcast 5 discovered / 2 transcribed (AssemblyAI; Capital Allocators Cain/Voss and Moonshots NVIDIA $96.2B skipped — craft / AI-overweight).
